Abstract

Along with the progressive development of the interactive Web 2.0 innovative methods of financing projects and ideas emerged in recent years. Within this spectrum the financial instrument Crowdfunding, initially used within the creative field, also provides opportunities for financing public and charitable projects in municipalities. The aim of this paper is on the one hand to give an overview on this new, multi-faceted and underexplored type of financing. On the other hand it illustrates chances and obstacles of public Crowdfunding initiatives based on a case study approach.
