Abstract

ABSTRACT Measurements of cross-modulation effects in a commercial medium power S-band TWT are reported. The tube was fed with two simultaneous monochromatic input signals of frequencies 2.15 and 3.80 Ohz. The relations between the cross-modulation and the non-linear distortion with only one of the signals present are investigated and found to be in very good agreement with a theoretical analysis. For the two-signal case the non-linear amplitude and phase distortions in various representations (compression, AM to PM cross-conversion, etc.) are given as functions of parameters like the helix voltage and the output power. It is confirmed that a low helix voltage gives low AM to PM conversion and low AM to PM cross-conversion, while a high helix voltage gives a good amplitude linearity, i.e. low compression and amplitude cross-modulation.
