Abstract
Two rhesus monkeys that were already highly proficient at cross-modal recognition (touch to vision and vision to touch) underwent successively bilateral removals of cortex from the superior temporal sulcus and from the dorso lateral prefrontal region. One animal acquired a persistent visual impairment after the first removal; and both were transiently severely impaired at tactile learning after the second removals. Nonetheless, both animals gave evidence of a high level of cross-modal recognition after each operation.
