Abstract

Abstract In Northern Ireland a small minority of marriages are between Catholics and Protestants and may be referred to as ‘cross community’ or ‘mixed marriages’, representing a potent breakdown of the social divide. The greater part of this paper deals with the consequences of such marriages for and experiences of 64 couples through semi-structured taped interviews. The perspective is individual and interpersonal, and does not deal with the wider social consequences of a mixed marriage.
