Abstract

This chapter focuses on higher education (HE) cross-border cooperation (CBC) and the implications of Brexit for students and academic staff in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Cross-border mobility is considered as an important resource for enhancing regional resilience. However, the withdrawal of the UK from the EU has threatened the Irish-Northern Irish peace process that was formalized in the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. This chapter explores the relevance of HE CBC on the island of Ireland and how it contributes to regional resilience during times of crisis. By considering the geopolitical impact of Brexit on Irish-Northern Irish relations, this chapter shows that HE cross-border mobility is an important factor supporting the ongoing Irish peace process. The border has transformed into a site and form of resilience that continues to stabilize the region – if the open-border policy between Ireland and Northern Ireland remains intact also in the future.
