Abstract

Cross sections for production of stable magnesium isotopes by proton induced reactions in aluminum have been measured by mass spectrometry. Magnesium containing a few nano grams(10-9g)of induced products was separated from the target, by solvent extraction of aluminum followed by cation exchange purification for magnesium. Average cross sections for a reaction 27Al(p, α)24Mg are 140±30mb and 140±30mb in the ranges of 15-11 MeV and 11-6 MeV protons respectively, and for a reaction 27Al(p, 2p)26Mg, 50±10mb by 15-11 MeV p.
