Abstract

Dissociative excitation of the zinc atom and the singly charged zinc ion upon collisions of slow monoenergetic electrons with zinc dibromide molecules was studied by means of the extended crossed beams technique. Twenty seven excitation cross sections were measured and five optical excitation functions were detected at an electron energy of 30 eV. Cross sections for dissociative excitation of 4p1P°1, 5s3S0, and 4p3P°1 levels and the contribution of cascade mechanism to the population of five levels were determined. Cross sections for excitation of both resonance lines upon e–ZnBr2and e–Zn collisions were found to be quite different. The main dissociative excitation channels at low electron energies were discussed.
