Abstract

Quenching cross-section values have been obtained for 28 compounds. These include protiated, deuteriated, and halogenated hydrocarbons as well as some oxygen- and sulfur-containing species to which the nitrous oxide method had not been applied previously. The earlier reported H/D primary kinetic isotope effect of about 15 has been confirmed for n- and isobutane and cyclohexane, but cyclopropane exhibited no isotope effect. The relation between substrate structure and quenching cross section values is compatible with the postulated electrophilic character of the Hg 6(3P1) atom. Discrepancies with values based on fluorescence measurements indicate the complex nature of the energy-transfer mechanism.
