Abstract

The cross section for electronic quenching of the B 1Σ + state of CO has been measured afte a two-step excitation via the intermediate A 1Π sate by the subsequent fluorescence from the final excited B 1Σ + state back down to the X 1Σ + ground state and from its pressure dependence. In the case of the B 1Σ + state, the measured quenching cross section for hydrogen of 20 Å 2 is at least an order of magnitude larger than that for helium suggesting the formation of an excited collisional COH 2 complex.
