Abstract
A cross-modality matching test was employed to study the relationship between articulatory pressure and loudness. Each of 6 male adults adjusted tongue pressure to match the loudness of a white noise signal. Power functions adequately described the estimation, production, and cross-modality matching data. The power function exponent of the cross-modality match was 0.73. The role of the lingual pressure-sensing system was discussed in terms of exponential differences between speech and non-speech tasks and the servo-control of the oral-facial muscular complex.
