Abstract

Jointly organized by the Societe francaise de photographie (SFP) and the Musee d'Orsay, the conference 'Photographie: les nouveaux enjeux de l'histoire' was held in Paris, 13–15 November 2003. 1 Meeting in the museum's ‘Salle des Fetes,’ a lavish nineteenth-century salon festooned with gilt boiserie and mirrors, twenty-four speakers engaged an enthusiastic audience of more than 150 people. While the topics presented by the photographic historians, curators, collectors, dealers and conservators varied widely in content and method, the differences proved to be cohesive rather than divisive — bringing the various participants together in an enormously successful exchange
