Abstract

Experiments conducted on the cropping of round aluminium alloy bars using torque and a narrow band of radial compressive stress are reported. The combinations of lateral stress, torque and twist needed to crop 17.9 mm diameter aluminium alloy bars have been determined. A theoretical explanation of the phenomenon is advanced. Surface features of the cropped ends and the time to fracture the bar are discussed.
