Abstract

This chapter discusses how cover crops affect crop production based on the available research information. According to two global reviews, cover crops in most cases either have no effect or reduce subsequent crop yields. The first global review indicated that cover crops can reduce crop yields by approximately 4% relative to no cover crops. Cover crop impacts on crop yields can vary between cool and warm climates. It is often presumed cover crops can reduce crop yields in arid and semiarid regions by using water needed for the next crop. Cover crop effects on crop production can particularly depend on which cover crop species are used. Non-legume cover crops such as grasses could reduce or have no effect on subsequent crop yields by immobilizing nutrients or competing for nutrients with the main crop.
