COTTON *Anthony Cotton, the author of this article was lecturer in Seventeenth-Century Studies at the University of Auckland, but died in 1974, in his thirtieth year, from the after-effects of an illness resulting from a virus infection contracted while doing voluntary service in Jordan in 19667. Educated at Cranleigh School and Merton College, Oxford, he successfully completed his Oxford D. Phil. thesis on ‘London News books in the Civil War: their political attitudes and sources of information’ (1971) under the supervision of Professor Valerie Pearl, who has prepared the present article for the press.Search for more papers by this author A.
