Abstract
During the war that seems to have no end in sight, the “Poilu”*, shifted to and fro between front line trenches and rear areas, has spent some of his waiting time to craft items to use every day or as souvenirs of his time on the frontlines. This “trench art” finds its inspiration in the fighting man’s surroundings, his yearnings, but also his rewards. The Croix de Guerre, as soon as it is created, is in good stead, sculpted in wood, carved in metal or drawn on paper, disappointment for some, proudly set fort award for those who were so honored.
