Abstract
This passage from Ibn Hayyân, the great xith century historian, deals with the administration of the two « slave » rulers of the first taifa kingdom in Valencia between 1010 and 1017 A.D. It was handed down to us by Ibn Bassâm in the Dahïra (éd. Ihsân 'Abbâs, 3d part, t III, p. 13-21) then, with a few variants, by Ibn Idâri (Bayàn, t III). Its main interest lies in the fact that Ibn Hayyân, who lived at the time when the events he describes occurred, relies on the evidence given by eyewitnesses. Appart from factual datas which have already been noticed, this text offers interesting indications on the social and economic life of the eastern part of al-Andalus in the early years of the xith century, about the formation of a specific system of great estates with detriment to free peasantry in the valendan rural area in particular.
