Abstract

Tetragonal niobium suboxides NbOx and NbOz (Nb3O) have been grown by solid state oxidation of metallic niobium at 360 and 390 °C respectively. Electron microscopy and diffraction studies have been used to identify the lattice correspondence between the suboxides and the niobium solid solution matrix. The twinned structure of NbOx has allowed to determined the interface energy of the twin planes which have been found to be in the range of 22–28 erg/cm2.
