Abstract

The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of Cr intermediate layer on wear behavior of CrN coated aluminum alloy. CrN and Cr intermediate layer were coated onto aluminum alloy JIS A2024 by arc ion plating method. The different Cr and CrN film thickness specimens were prepared for investigation of adhesion strength and tribological properties. Pin-on-disk wear tests were performed and optical microscopy and scratch test were used to characterize the damage in the film. Scratch experiments revealed a strong adhesion of the thick intermediate layer. In addition, thick intermediate layer and high Cr/CrN ratio indicated high delaminating resistance while wear test. Thus, the wear and delaminating properties can be improved by introducing the Cr intermediate layer.
