Abstract

According to the census from 1528-1530, Železnik had 625 households with about 4,500 residents. Belgrade nahia had 2413 households with about 17,000 inhabitants, 22000 in total with the city of Belgrade. Nahia Zemun, in 1546, had 343 households with about 2400 inhabitants. In the middle of the 16th century, in 246 villages and 4 towns, the Belgrade Eparchy had 34 churches, 38 priests, and 7 monasteries in four nahias. There are 4 permanent and weekly squares, and a total of 40 mezras and 49 mills. Nahia Zemun does not have them on the list. The city of Belgrade in 1536 had 79 Muslim homes, 4 mosques, 29 Gypsy homes, 453 Serb homes, and 2 or 3 churches. A total of 561 homes and about 4,000 inhabitants. In 1560, Belgrade had 360 Muslim homes and only 60 Christian homes. The seat of the Belgrade-Srem Eparchy and Bishop Romano was probably near the church of St. Archangel Michael in Belgrade near the Sava, where Serbs lived and where their cemetery was.
