Abstract
The author of this article aimed to conduct a holistic study on the critical discourse analysis (CDA) of visual semiosis in picture news. Integrating various theories within the field of CDA and multimodal studies, a theoretical framework of critical visual analysis is postulated to facilitate empirical study. Theoretically, the research sets out to help establish the academic identity of the critical multimodal discourse analysis, as discussed in Theo van Leeuwen (2012), and attempts to construct a holistic theoretical framework of critical visual discourse studies.
