Abstract

Traditionally, English language teaching is viewed as an activity of imparting four macro- skills of language: LSRW. With the English language acquiring new identities, such as the global language, the language of science and technology, the language of research, and the language of LPG in its various manifestations, it has forged a new indispensable alliance with critical thinking skills. English language acquisition in the changed and changing scenario calls for the integration of language skills with critical thinking skills. In turn, the role of English language teacher correspondingly changes from a mere facilitator to an active co- participant along with learners in the classroom. An English language teacher is always an English language teacher anywhere and everywhere. Learners acquire English language skills and critical thinking skills as one inseparable package. Acquisition of one without the other at a time is no longer is sustainable. This paper deals with the feasibility and desirability of integrating English language skills and critical thinking skills and examines the role of English language teachers in such a merger.
