Abstract
External beam radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal cancer is complicated by the presence of critical structures near the target volume. With modern image-guided patient setup techniques, dose variation caused by patient positioning uncertainty can be greatly reduced. However, nasopharyngeal cancer patients often incur significant loss of facial mass during treatments primarily due to radiation, whose effect on dose variations to critical structures is not well investigated. This study aims to evaluate this effect using daily helical tomotherapy megavoltage CT (MVCT) images, and to evaluate the magnitude of decrease in parotid gland volume during the course of treatment.
