Abstract
An analytic solution of the Bean critical state model is given for superconductor thin films or plates with elliptic shape and constant thickness in a perpendicular magnetic field. This two-dimensional solution exhibits qualitatively novel features and reproduces the known one-dimensional solutions for long strips and circular disks.
