Abstract

Objective To study the critical size defect of periosteum-retained bone defect nonunion models in the radius of New Zealand rabbits. Methods Forty adult Zealand rabbits were selected to establish bone defect nonunion model of radius, and divide into five groups of 10,15,20,25 and 30 mm (n =8 each).Bone nonunion was observed by X-ray examination after 4,8,12 and 16 weeks. The data were analyzed by SPSS.Results In the periosteum-retained models, the length of bone defect segment in the middle of radium was 25-30 mm.When the length of bone defect segment was 35.5%-42.2% of that of the radius,or when the length of bone defect segment was 6-7 times of the transverse diameters, bone defect nonunion occurred. Conclusion The numerical value is of the critical size defect of this bone defect nonunion model of the radius. Key words: Radius ; Nonunion ; Critical size defect
