Abstract
This article outlines the development of tantalum carbide fiber-reinforced nickel-base superalloy eutectic composites in terms of critical property optimization. When considered as a case study in materials development and design, important issues in testing and characterization can be identified. These same issues may apply directly to current commitments to develop advanced high-temperature materials for aerospace applications. In particular, the important role that the materials engineer can play in the total design process becomes clear.
