Abstract

The magneto-transport in a composite medium, made of normal conductor, perfect insulator, and perfect conductor constituents, exhibits singular or critical point behavior at certain compositions of a disordered microstructure and for certain directions of the average current density in an ordered microstructure. This kind of behavior occurs when the Hall conductivity of the normal constituent is much greater than its transverse Ohmic conductivity, but much less than its longitudinal Ohmic conductivity, e.g., if that constituent is a free-electron conductor and a strong magnetic field is applied. This critical behavior is sometimes related to the phenomenon of anisotropic percolation. The local behavior of current flow paths which leads to this behavior is described.
