Abstract

Current transperineal prostate brachytherapy technique results in needles passing through the penile bulb and neurovascular bundles (NVB), with resulting traumatic injury and potential for dysfunction. With the emergence of robotic technology, accurate angled needle insertion without reliance on a template becomes feasible. Our goals were to develop a non-template based permanent prostate brachytherapy treatment planning system (TPS) and demonstrate its usage on designing treatment plans which avoids needles passing through critical organs for erectile function such as penile bulb and NVB.
