Abstract

The effects of gate entry velocity on the soundness of magnesium alloy ZK51A was investigated. Surface turbulence was evaluated using a high resolution optical video camera. The results show that in this alloy, the critical gate velocity approaches 0·5 m s−1. Surface turbulence phenomena occur at velocities above this value, reducing the mechanical properties of the cast product. The results are in line with the critical gate velocities observed in aluminium alloys.
