Abstract

Abstract On the basis of Auger electron spectroscopy measurements of AISI 304 and 316 stainless steel exposed to solutions with varying pH and chloride concentration, a critical film composition on creviced surfaces is introduced and connected with the earlier-used concept of critical crevice solution for initiation of crevice corrosion. The results suggest that the critical film composition is determined by the enrichment of chloride ions of the crevice solution rather than by its low pH.
