Abstract

The temperature and field dependent magnetization of the quasi-2D ferromagnets K 2CuF 4 and Rb 2CrCl 4 is measured near T c within the easy c planes using linear magnetic birefringence. Scaled plots of M/H 1/δ i versus ∈/ H 1/βδ i exhibit 3D XY critical behavior for K 2CuF 4, whereas Rb 2CrCl 4 is nearly tricritical crossing over to 3D Ising below T c.
