Abstract

A new criterion for gas–liquid phase change is presented based on the existence of purely oscillatory modes of the radial distribution function in the asymptotic domain of large interparticle separation. Working with a recently derived linear equation for the radial distribution function this criterion is found to be T̄=(9/4)n̄. Barred parameters represent the ratio of variables to their respective critical values. This finding is in very good agreement with results of the van der Waal theory of fluids in the low-density regime.
