Abstract

DIFFERENTIAL Doppler measurements on radio waves emitted from artificial satellites have been successfully used to obtain data of the ionospheric electron content. Uncertainties inherent in the indiscriminate use of this method have not been discussed so far. Attempts to obtain Doppler data of high precision indicate that the consequences of the basic assumptions must be considered. It is therefore necessary to interpret differential Doppler data with care.
