Abstract

The problem of determining the duration of occupation at sites remains one of the most difficult exercises in the study of prehistory. Many important questions of site interpretation are clearly intimately related to this issue. For example, it is impossible to reliably determine a site’s cultural affiliation without knowing how long it was occupied. Similarly, without controlling for the duration of occupation, we are hampered in our socioeconomic reconstructions of the past, as well as in our efforts to address problems of general theoretical interest.
