Abstract

This article discusses the Europeanization of Europe, understood as the imposition and interiorization of Christian norms and values that took place on this continent between the 11th and 13th centuries. It suggests that the first historical spiritual conquest involved Europe, rather than the New World. At the same lime this conquest established a process of guilt, in which external was replaced by internal domination. The second part of this article interprets the spiritual conquest of New Spain as a process of Westernization. This meant that the establishment of Christian institutions, such as confession, lead to a process of individualization among the indigenous population, which was not only an indispensable condition for Christianization, but also for the imposition of modernity and individuality, the bases of Western civilization
