Abstract

During these crisis years, the trend in the region has been to cut state funding for higher education, according to data developed by Hines and Pruyne and reported in the November 6, 1991, Chronicle of Higher Education. Although there are a few exceptions to the trend, Connecticut and Vermont lost 2 percent and 3 percent respectively from 1990 to 1992. New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts lost a massive 13 percent, 17 percent, and 28 percent respectively. In addition, the numbers of majors and options have declined.
