Abstract

The crisis in history, and specially the crisis of the fourteenth century, is characterized by increased poverty and hunger, that is, the suffering of a large part of the population. So much so, that it can be said that the phenomenon characteristic of pre-industrial times, known as pauperism, appeared in the 14th century. Poor harvests, that used to act as a trigger for subsistence crisis before industrialization, were due in general to natural causes, but their severity and frequency had almost always social causes. This article starts from the study of medieval underproduction crisis to end with the 14 th century crisis as a systemic crisis.
