Abstract

Philippe Dautrey. Writing the war. A war diary analysis. During the war of 1914-1918, writing had an nearly existential function in the life of every one, thus allowed to keep an identity and integrate the war into his own personnal world. We tried to pick up the trails of writing conditions and the way they changed in the wardiary of an "ordinary" soldier, the gunner JulesTalmon, by using the material- data griven by the text and by reconstituting the way it had been written. Untill the autumn of 1915, the writing and identification tools wich Jules Talmon had in his hands seem to allow him to integrate himself easily in the warprocess, but, after that period, the lengthening of the fights made the tools inadequate and induces him to reconstruct new ones inhis diary.
