Abstract

This article reports the results of a survey of incoming criminology freshmen at a large northeastern state university. The College Student Expectation Questionnaire [CSXQ] was administered to 97% (n = 151) of the criminology admissions for fall 2001. The results document wide variation in both preparedness and expectations about college. We were able to explain early college success (as measured by first semester GPA) by using SAT scores, an index of expected effort, and class attendance. We argue that this type of systematic information on our students, their abilities, and expectations is needed to develop strategies to enhance both the educational success of students and program-level adaptations to the challenges facing higher education.
