Abstract

The process of criminal profiling is one of the most frequently discussed and misunderstood concepts in law enforcement. Much of the attention on profiling comes from the popular media, and profiling is regularly featured in movies and television as a foolproof method of identifying criminals. However, profiling is also a process that has been vilified by academics, mental health professionals, and others for a variety of shortcomings and inconsistencies. In reality, profiling is nothing more than an investigative tool that has proven useful in resolving some challenging criminal cases. It is not a magic bullet that is effective in all cases. Profiling has evolved significantly through the years. The goal of this chapter is to provide a better understanding of the current state of criminal profiling and the benefits and limitations of its use.
