Abstract

The purpose of the article is to study a horrific event that completely changed the course of history and today has a diverse impact on millions of people around the world. The methodological basis of the study is the use of general scientific methods: the method of theoretical generalization of the criteria of genocide – to destroy in whole or in part any national, ethnic, racial or religious group. The analysis of documents and materials that left eyewitnesses of those events was also applied. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is that the main negative tendencies of the cause of the mechanism of genocide as a way of organized destruction of the Ukrainian people are revealed. The article studies the development trends of the Ukrainian tragedy of 1932– 1933. The study is based on information from the Institute of Demography and Social Research, the examination of which provided data on the loss of the population of Ukraine within the then USSR. The study made it possible to determine that the Holodomor is the greatest tragedy in the history of Ukraine, the most serious crime ever committed against our people. Conclusions. It was found that in the vast majority of cities and villages of Ukraine died of hunger and cold, whole villages and towns died. Predatory grain procurement was carried out quickly, churches were closed and destroyed. The then authorities carried out a «cleansing» of the Ukrainian intelligentsia. Humanity, Ukrainian society, young people have no right to forget the greatest tragedy of the twentieth century. Keywords: Holodomor, memory, collectivization, Ukrainian SSR, genocide.
