Abstract

Shani D'Cruze has combed legal records deposited in local archives in Lancashire, Suffolk, and Cheshire for evidence about sexual violence. Reviewing the Justices' minutes of Petty Sessions and police sectional occurrence books supplemented by newspaper [End Page 511] reports, D'Cruze has assembled 909 cases involving sexuality and violence (variously defined--from murder and rape to the different levels of assault to breach of the peace and drunk and disorderly conduct) and bastardy (that is, affiliation orders). The author draws upon this "microcosmic" (24) evidence in creative ways to sustain conclusions that can claim significance that goes beyond the particular cases forming the evidential foundation for the arguments.
