Abstract
We usually only have information on crimes that result in charges being brought. But, there are often instances in which charges are brought. Here are two case histories of such events.Case History #1: DanDan (not his real name) is a big, stocky man, about 45 -50 years old who lives in an upper middle class neighborhood. The houses in his neighborhood probably start at $90,000. The mail boxes are brick, which is aesthetically nice. However, the other day I noticed that one was smashed. I wondered why.Several years ago Dan was fired from his job as a physical education teacher for peeking into the girls' dressing room. Recently, a neighbor has seen him go behind houses when he and the neighbor are, separately, walking late at night. Is Dan continuing his peeking behavior?About three years ago in front of Dan's house were the sounds of a woman being threatened. She would, several times, say No, no, no then OK, OK. Also, Dan was trying to get her into his car. This went on for a while, until a police car pulled up and the officer forced Dan to lie on the ground. The cop said on the ground. Get on the ground. It's for your protection as well as mine. But, after stopping the problem, case was filed against Dan.The other day Dan and his wife were walking around the neighborhood and he saw Bill, a neighbor and friend of his. Dan started accusing Bill of looking at his wife, who was wearing short pants. Bill felt that Dan was going to attack him and started yelling loudly at Dan, to attract neighbors. It worked and Dan did not attack Bill. Later, Dan apologized to Bill, saying he had, unfortunately, gotten back on cocaine.Tony, an auto mechanic, is one of the strongest looking men I have ever seen. Dan recently tried to pick a fight with him at a hotel bar. Tony tried to avoid the fight but Dan persisted. Finally, Tony said Let's go outside. It was a one punch fight, with Tony winning by a knockout. Now, here is the explanation for the broken mailbox. It seems there were three broken mailboxes, although I only saw one. Dan was threatening his wife and she contacted a minister who lives in their neighborhood. Dan got his truck and tried to run over both of them. He failed, but hit three mailboxes. The interesting thing is that he is apparently facing charges for any of this. Neither his wife nor the minister want to pursue charges, and he is paying for repair of the mailboxes so people are not pursuing charges.Just another day in an otherwise very peaceful neighborhood.Case History #2: TroyDuring middle school and high school Troy delighted in beating up other kids, especially if they were of a different religion than his. During his adolescence his mother was hospitalized for schizophrenia, leaving Troy's care to his father. …
