Abstract

The present entry deals with crime, punishment, the prison system, and the social and legal norms in place in the United Kingdom from the middle ages until today. It defines the socioeconomic and legal contexts of crime and punishment through the centuries and traces the vast developments in societal perception and regulatory practice. The entry sheds light on the interplay between crime, punishment, and crime prevention in the contemporary criminal justice system. It concludes by discussing the way forward in the matter of reducing crime through a variety of educational and technological undertakings that are based on emerging trends and current criminal statistics in the United Kingdom.
