Abstract

Crew Resource Management (CRM) continues to receive increasing attention throughout the aviation community. Some form of CRM is manifested each time a pilot takes control of the cockpit. NASA sponsored research projects suggest that the addition of CRM concepts to current training programmes in flight operations offers solutions to human factors related problems. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) involvement in CRM began in 1975 when a request was received seeking to implement a new type of training at Northwest Airlines. The goal of the regulatory programme in the early 1980s was to work with the industry to develop a draft Notice of Proposed Rule-Making that would address the issues of crew concept and CRM. In 1990, the FAA issued an advisory circular on CRM and comprehensive CRM training became a reality. Before initiating a CRM training programme, it is important to examine the existing status of the culture relative to CRM.
