Abstract

The upper Tithonian to Upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary pelagic and flysch facies of the Krasta-Cukali zone in central Albania are described from several stratigraphic sections, five in the northern Cukali subzone and three in the larger central and southern Krasta subzone. Preliminary facies analysis shows that pelagic deposition in the Cukali subzone was at a greater depth than that of the Krasta subzone, and that no terrigenous clastics reached this basin. Ophiolitic detritus derived from the eastern Mirdita zone is found in the Krasta subzone. Radiolaria and planktonic foraminifers allow a generalized biostratigraphic correlation between the sections. The palaeogeographic evolution of the zone is also outlined.
