Abstract

In order to prepare strong adhesive diamond coatings on hard alloy, it is proposed to use as an underlayer a coating obtaining by electric-spark alloying (ESA) with both diamond-free and diamond-containing chromium electrodes. The optimum alloying regime is found for the surface of hard alloy VK6 (WC–6% Co) with electrodes providing relatively low roughness, high continuity and thickness (4–7 μm) of underlayers, sufficient for resolving this problem. Phase formation of the underlayer on the hard alloy surface is studied. Use of ESA technology provides significantly higher adhesion of a diamond coating to a tool.
