Abstract

This invention relates to a process for perpetuating a cytoplasmic male sterile line of a plant species capable of regeneration which comprises: a) combining a nucleus from a protoplast derived from the cytoplasmic male sterile line with cytoplasm from a protoplast derived from a male fertile line under protoplast fusion conditions, to form a male fertile cybrid; bl culturing and regenerating the cybrid under culturing and regeneration conditions to produce a male fertile adult plant; c) crossing the male fertile plant with a plant of the cytoplasmic male sterile line so that cytoplasmic male sterile progeny are produced.
