Abstract

AbstractSignificance and relevance of the stated topic is determined by the low demand for cargo terminals of river ports, available in large cities, generating various cargo flows. Retrospective analysis shows that trends in the development of country’s market mechanism are accompanied by a drop in river transport in the volume of traffic of various cargo types and passengers on inland waterways, and this, despite the significant reserve of navigable routes throughput, is precisely a “brake” on the development of other transport modes. Identification of reasons for the absence of general cargo flows in river ports showed a low readiness of the management and, to a lesser extent, production units of river ports to meet the modern realities of transport market - the requirements for transportation conditions declared by cargo owners. The article discusses possibilities of river ports to fulfill the conditions for handling such cargo and shows the disadvantages hindering the inclusion of ports in the modern process of cargo flows. The necessity of marketing research by port workers is substantiated as a means to determine their place in a specific regional transport market and to ensure the river port transition from the role of a direct transshipment terminal to the role of a transport operator for goods promotion.
