Abstract

The surge of feminism in social theory in the 1970s aimed to recover women's experiences across time and space. At first glance it seems that we are confronted here with the all too familiar Western equation between 'nature' and 'woman'. In this familiar equation, the trope 'woman' is constructed as a passive object embodying an empty container into which cultural value is poured and sociality extracted. The infinite malleability of 'woman' in western philosophy has imbued the female body with the capacity to stand for things other than herself - above all, Nature. This prototypical feminine body pulsating with agency and purpose is also a knowing body. The choice of the female body in Turkana creation stories is simply because this is the only body capable of creating more bodies (through childbirth) and being able to contain and deliver a different body.
