Abstract

ABSTRACT We understand that different countries, particularly European, despite different cultures and systems generate similar problems arising from the professional centred approach. The goal then was to transform our professional centred pyramidal organization into a patient centred matrix organization with the participation of patients and professionals to obtain outcomes that matter to the patient and demonstrate that its implementation is feasible in large and complex institutions within the American or European system. The conventional vertical management system is maintained, but there is also a transversal management structure, which ensures that the patient’s needs are met during their hospital stay, in terms of safety, efficiency in circuits, and care excellence. We have had extraordinary results. The supporting core idea is a patient-focussed treatment by enriched process with lean and design thinking tools. Many large and complex health institutions want to change their organization. This is a successful example with a real participation and great results. This work aims to encourage all healthcare (HC) organizations, no matter how big and complex they are, to transform themselves, disregarding their HC system, they be American or European.
